Bill LaBounty est originaire d'un état de la côte Ouest, l'Oregon. Comme bon nombre de jeunes de sa génération, il a quitté le cocon familial pour tenter l'aventure en roulant plein sud le long de l'Océan Pacifique, attiré par Los Angeles, la ville de la musique par excellence. C'est dans ce décor paradisiaque de la Californie du Sud, que Bill LaBounty a réussi a signer un contrat avec une grosse maison de disques. Il a fréquenté les studios les plus prestigieux, entouré des musiciens et artistes les plus en vue au cours de la décennie bénie des Seventies. L'auteur de "Livin' It Up" s'est alors tourné vers le calme et le sérieux des studios de Nashville, ville surnommée à juste titre "Music city". Désormais, Bill LaBounty vit au coeur du Tennessee dans une maison située en pleine verdure où il a installé son propre studio d'enregistrement. Et il n'est pas le seul à avoir choisi cette région puisqu'il a pour voisins Sheryl Crow et Michael McDonald.

Georges Lang lui a rendu visite récemment pour l'enregistrement de ses Nocturnes. Ensemble, ils on évoqué la plupart des titres qui figurent dans le superbe coffret de 4 CDs qui vient de paraître intitulé "TIME STARTS NOW", une compilation qui balaie la carrière de Bill de 1975 à 2011. Ainsi donc, Bill LaBounty est entré dans le club des "auditeurs pas comme les autres" qui programment l'émission légendaire des nuits sur RTL, après Ben Harper, Iggy Pop, James Taylor, Harry Connick Jr., Murray Head, Katie Melua, Roger Hodgson, Christopher Cross...

2012 sera sans aucun doute l’année des Eagles, qui vont célébrer leur quarantième anniversaire musical.

Le groupe le plus vendeur de l'histoire américaine sera de retour sur la route pour de nombreuses surprises.

La première sera le retour dans le groupe du célèbre chanteur/compositeur Jack Tempchin ! Une belle surprise. De même, les Eagles effectueront leur première tournée Sud Américaine avec plus de 40 dates prévues sur ce continent. Ils viennent aussi de confirmer qu'ils joueront en avril au Jazz Heritage Festival de la Nouvelle Orleans. Bientôt plus de news sur Cool Night.

A noter que Glenn Frey a récemment annoncé qu'il réaliserait un nouvel album solo pour 2013, il devrait s’intituler "AFTER HOURS", titre composé avec Jack Tempchin. A propos de ce dernier, son DVD/CD : "LIVE AT TALES FROM THE TAVERN" est terminé, il devrait sortir ce printemps.

This long-awaited 30th Anniversary recording project from Jack Mack and the Heart Attack features 12 amazing tracks--7 originals and 5 "re-imaginations", including two by the late, great Solomon Burke. "Don’t Give Up On Me" has a wonderful Lee Thornburg horn arrangement a la Ray Charles, and "Soul Meeting" features five incredible singers: Bill Champlin, Max Carl, Mike Finnigan, Tim Scott and Mark Campbell all sharing the lead.

The Rolling Stones classic "Under My Thumb" is reimagined in the spirit of Otis Redding, circa 1969. Also included are Burt Bacharach’s, "Walk On By" and Otis Redding’s, "I’ve Been Loving You Too Long" – featuring 2010 America’s Got Talent winner, Michael Grimm.

The original songs include: "Ride The Rocket", describing lead singer Mark Campbell’s high school days; "Soul Man", a tribute to all the legendary soul singers who have passed away; "Sha La La", an ode to street corner singers; and "I Just Need You", sung by bassist Bruce Atkinson, a Sam Cooke-influenced shuffle.

The bluesy, funky track "A New Past", is a song penned for this album and sung by former Jack Mack and 38 Special lead singer, Max Carl. "Hard To Fall" is a gritty get-down-to-the-bone Rock and Soul groove.

Hailing from Denmark saxophonist Michael Lington delights since many years the smooth jazz scene with his solo albums. After his self-titled debut album (1997) followed Vivid (2002), Everything Must Change (2002), Stay With Me (2004), A Song For You (2006) and Heat (2008). Also to mention Best of Michael Lington – The Songbook Collection (2010).

His newest album is entitled Pure, scheduled for release February 14th 2012 on Trippin N' Rhythm. Guest musicians are Michael Bolton, Lee Ritenour, Jonathan Butler, Brian Culbertson, Ray Parker Jr., Jeff Golub, Jeff Babko, Paul Jackson Jr. and many more. The album was produced by executive producer Les Cutmore.

The album starts with Roadtrip, a song which is since January on heavy rotation on many smooth jazz radio stations. A co-production of Michael and Brian Culbertson the funky tune features Lee Ritenour on guitar. The song has its edgy moments, which is a fortunate refreshment.

As counterpart understandable is the mellow Serenade. Co-produced by Michael Broening the song gets glamour by Torcuato Mariano's acoustic guitar and Lington's emotional alto sax. The up-tempo Playtime takes a glimpse at the Rock music of the eighties. The song reminds me of Huey Lewis' Hip to Be Square.

With Lower East Slide Lington continues this energy driven and fast paced style. Jeff Babko (Toto, Larry Carlton, James Taylor) adds the perfect retro sound on Wurlitzer, Hammond B3 and Clavinet. Michael Stever contributes a mighty horn arrangement. Autry DeWalt Mixon, better known as Junior Walker, composed the legendary Shotgun. The song is as demanding as it is popular. Lington stands up the immense challenge with flying colors in full mastery.

On Like Old Times Lington conjures a vintage feeling especially for those, who are already full of years. Bill Withers' megahit Lovely Day was often covered by smooth jazz artists like Walter Beasley, Elan Trotman, Luico Hopper, Peter White, Michael Manson and many more. I especially love Tollak Ollestad's harmonica solo and Thano Sahnas' acoustic guitar decoration, which fades out too soon. With Movin On Lington pays anew tribute to the mainstream Rock. Crossover is the magic word of success.

Lington loves the contact to his fans and when he can take a bath in the crowd, both are enjoyed. Come On Over is such a melody for his high energy concerts. More slow and relaxing is the final tune A Simpler Time, an invitation to dream.

Pure means without any extraneous and unnecessary elements. Michael Lington's music doesn't match the title but absolutely mirrors Lington's contemporary multi-faceted repertoire.

Si pour janvier, la réédition de "GRINGO" de Gregg Rolie (Journey/The Storm) est lancée, le label a annoncé les suivantes. Au programme, Marc Jordan "A HOLE IN THE WALL" et le groupe Cannata "IMAGES OF FOREVER", deux albums rares, qui seront remasterisés et réédités avec des titres bonus. Pour mars est annoncé l'album éponyme de Bricklin réalisé en 1986, qui verra trois titres supplémentaires apparaître en bonus.

The AOR Heaven Classix series continues in 2012 with a nice bunch of classic AOR- and West Coast albums. Set for release in January is the second solo album from former Santana, Journey and The Storm keyboarder Gregg Rolie, entitled Gringo.

Following in February are two much sought after gems: Marc Jordan's ultimate West Coast release A Hole In The Wall and Cannata's hi-tech AOR mega classic Images Of Forever. Both re-issues will contain two bonus tracks.

In the loop for March is the re-release of the mega rare self-titled Bricklin album from 1986 incl. 3 bonus tracks - stay tuned for more details. As usual all AOR Heaven Classix releases are digitally remastered by Chris Lyne and feature liner notes by Dave Reynolds.

Après son départ de Journey et avant de former le groupe The Storm, le claviériste et chanteur Gregg Rolie se lanca dans une carrière solo.

Après la réalisation de son premier album éponyme en 1985, il réalisa en 1987 "GRINGO". Ce dernier est réédité chez AOR Heaven Classix et remasterisé pour l'occasion.

Neal Schon, Dann Huff, Carlos Santana, Vinnie Colaiuta et Bob Marlette étaient en guest.

After his departure from Journey and before the forming of The Storm, keyboarder/singer Gregg Rolie started a solo career in the mid 1980’s. Two years after his self-titled debut, he released the sophomore album "Gringo". The album features an impressive list of guest musicians, among others Bob Marlette, Neal Schon, Dann Huff, Carlos Santana & Vinnie Colaiuta. The production was handled by Richie Zito (Heart, White Lion, Bad English...) and David Kershenbaum (Tracy Chapman, Bryan Adams....) while for the songwriting Gregg Rolie got some help from Martin Page, Peter Becket and André Pessis. It goes without saying that an album created by such professionals became a true gem! Stylistically you can shelf "Gringo" right next to Robert Tepper’s "No Easy Way Out", Van Stephenson's "Suspicious Heart" and The Arrow's "The Lines Are Open". The comparison with the latter it no coincidence, since Gregg Rolie covered their hit song "Talk Talk" for "Gringo". The legendary opener "The Hands Of Time", the pompous "Don’t Wanna Be Alone Tonight", the fast-paced "Too Late, Too Late", the smooth ballad "Fire At Night" (featuring an amazing guitar solo duel between Neal Schon and Carlos Santana) and the quite poppy "I Will Get To You" are further highlights featured on "Gringo". I am still in love with this album and in my opinion it’s a true classic. Unfortunately the AOR HEAVEN CLASSIX reissue doesn’t include any bonus tracks, but as usual it was remastered by Chris Lyne (Soul Doctor) and includes some liner notes by Dave Reynolds. Réédition Japonaise pour les 2 albums de Spider : "Spider" & "Between The Lines"

Originaire de New York, le groupe Spider formé en 1977 réalisa deux albums sur le label Dreamland Record au début des années 80, un premier album éponyme (1980) et un second "BETWEEN THE LINES" (1981) qui obtinrent un succès appréciable. Malheureusement, le groupe se sépara en 1984. Dommage, Spider avait le potentiel pour aller très loin avec un AOR brillant mené par une chanteuse au dessus du lot Amanda Blue et une compositrice, claviériste Holly Knight qui allait devenir renommée dans le milieu.

A noter, que deux de leurs titres "Change" et "Better Be Good To Me" furent deux gros hits pour John Waite et Tina Turner.

Les deux albums sont réédités au Japon. Spider possède encore actuellement un statut de groupe culte, notamment aux USA.

Spider were an American Rock band from New York. They formed in 1977, The band released two studio albums through Dreamland Records : "Spider" (1980) and "Between The Lines" (1981). Unfortunately, Spider disbanded in 1984. Too bad, the band got the potential to go very far with a brilliant AOR led by a top notch singer Amanda Blue and a famous keyboard/composer, Holly Knight.

Note, that two of their titles "Change" and "Better Be Good To Me" were two big hits for John Waite and Tina Turner.

Holly Knight went on to become a successful songwriter for various artists and later formed Device. Anton Fig and Jim Lowell toured with Link Wray and appeared on his live album Live At The Paradiso, recorded in 1979. Fig became a session drummer for several different bands throughout the rest of the 1980s, and later went on to play in Paul Shaffer's band on Late Night with David Letterman.

Both albums are reissued on Japan. Spider is currently still has a cult status, especially in the United States.

Le prolifique claviériste Jeff Lorber sera de retour avec un nouvel album annoncé pour le 31 janvier 2012.

"GALAXY" en est le joli titre qui s'annonce très Jazz Fusion. Le génial bassiste Jimmy Haslip (Yellowjackets) s'est personnellement investi dans ce projet en co-produisant cet album et en composant 5 titres, ce qui laisse présager d'excellentes augures. Jeff gets some help on the project from Yellowjackets' bassist Jimmy Haslip, saxophonist Eric Marienthal, trumpeter Randy Brecker, percussionist Lenny Castro, guitarists Paul Jackson, Jr. and Larry Koonse, and drummers Vinnie Colaiuta and Dave Weckl. Haslip co-produced the album and co-wrote five songs with Lorber. Galaxy is a follow-up to Lorber's Grammy nominated 2010 release, Now Is The Time and, once again, it offers a fresh approach to some of his most requested songs, including "Wizard Island", "City" and "The Samba". Lorber will kick off the New Year with a Jeff Lorber Fusion tour beginning on January 19 at Jazz Alley in Seattle, WA.

It’s official! Janey will release FALLEN FOR BRAZIL on Vivid Sound in Japan, January 25th of 2012. This release will include 3 new songs added to her collection of neo-Brazilian songs as well as revised mixes and fully mastered tracks.

Simultaneously, Janey will release on Vivid Sound a new compilation CD called “LOVE”. ROCK MEETS CLASSIC 2012: world stars present rock anthems in symphonic big screen sound.  After the sold-out arena tour at the beginning of the year, in January 2012 Ian Gillan, Steve Lukather and co. will embark on a European tour with the Bohemian Symphony Orchestra Prague. Five rock music legends, an orchestra and a band will play the greatest hits in rock history on one evening - that is ROCK MEETS CLASSIC!

Salut Marco, c’est un grand honneur pour nous que tu sois de retour sur Cool Night avec une grande surprise, un nouvel album, de plus un album live ("THINGS AND MOMENTS LIVE"). Peux-tu nous en dire plus sur la réalisation de ce génial projet ?

Merci Olivier, c'est réciproque. En ce qui concerne le nouvel enregistrement, l'idée était de donner une chance à mes chansons d'être partagées avec le public. J'avais aussi des morceaux inédits et également les chansons de mon premier CD, qui était assez expérimental, réalisé avec un budget limité et une utilisation importante de "programming". Nous avons tous toujours voulu entendre ces chansons avec l'énergie d'un groupe au complet qui joue en live.

Il doit être agréable de donner à tes chansons une nouvelle tournure ?

Bien sûr. J'ai adapté les arrangements originaux des chansons enregistrées, tout en les gardant reconnaissables. Mon idée d'un show en direct est de donner au public la même plénitude du matériel enregistré, en ajoutant le frisson d'une performance live, la personnalité des joueurs…

On peut facilement utiliser le mot "surprises", car nous trouvons sur "THINGS AND MOMENTS LIVE" des vidéos et des titres inédits, spécialement, "Breathless" et "Wish On A Star". Du nouveau matériel ou des chansons qui n'avait pas pu prendre place sur "THOUSAND THINGS" (2004) et "THIS MOMENT" (2008) ?

Les deux ballades que j'ai écrites à la fin des années 90, j'ai essayé de leur trouver un éditeur, mais ce n'est pas arrivé, donc elles sont restées dans le tiroir pendant quelques années. Quand j'ai enregistré "THOUSAND THINGS", nous avons senti qu'elles ne correspondaient pas au projet, la cause en était que cet album est sorti avec cette "saveur" typique qu'on trouvait dans les années 80 et le chant d'Andrea lui donnait un caractère fort. En 2008, quand nous avons réalisé mon second album, nous avons senti ces chansons un peu dépassées pour le projet, donc elles restaient une nouvelle fois non réalisées, mais j'ai toujours pensé qu'elles étaient de bonnes chansons. L'occasion de ce show semblait être le bon moment de les partager avec le public.

Les deux sont interprétées par Daphne Nisi. Quelques mots à son sujet.

J'ai fais mon chois sur Daphne parmi une liste de chanteurs connus et appréciés, qui néanmoins n'avait pas attiré mon attention. Sa voix a fait le reste. J’ai accroché dès le début et je voulais qu'elle soit partie prenante du projet. Daphne est vraiment talentueuse et elle possède une musicalité et un respect pour ce travail que je n'ai trouvé que parmi les grands. Comme moi, elle est perfectionniste et travailler avec elle, en studio et sur scène, est un jeu d'enfant. Je suis sûr que nous allons travailler à nouveau ensemble et peut-être qu'elle sera présente sur mon prochain album.

"Healing Rain" est une véritable chanson groovy interprétée par le chanteur danois de Westcoast Music/Funk Claus Leonardt (très belle voix). Peux-tu nous raconter ta rencontre avec lui et l’idée derrière ce titre.

J'ai rencontré Claus plus ou moins en 2005, quand j’enregistrais à Copenhague avec la chanteuse/compositrice danoise Anne Marie Bush. Claus est un chanteur doué, il a une vraie gamme expressive: il peut être très moderne, ce dont j'ai besoin et très classique dans le même temps. Il est aussi un auteur/compositeur. Quand il a entendu la démo de ma chanson, il voulait essayer de faire "sa" version vocale, j'ai tellement aimé le résultat que je l'ai invité pour interpréter cette chanson sur scène.

Bien sûr, nous ne pouvons oublier et nous sommes très heureux de ramener sur le devant "Got To Believe (This Time) ", un titre réalisé en collaboration avec Robbie Dupree (nous savons ici, qu’il aime beaucoup ta ville…. en riant). Facile de travailler avec lui ?

Oui, bien sûr. Robbie est une personne chevronné dans le music business et travailler avec lui en studio a été très amusant et un réel plaisir pour nous deux. La chanson que nous avons écrite est devenue un succès, étant appréciée même au-delà de nos attentes, nous avons donc décidé de l'inclure sur la tracklist du concert.

Tu es un arrangeur, un producteur, un compositeur, un pianiste et un claviériste. Pour toi, c’est un moyen d'expression naturel pour tous tes talents ou un chemin obligatoire pour créer habilement dans ton métier ?    

Eh bien, je dois dire que je suis surtout un arrangeur et un producteur. Composer et écrire fait aussi partie de mon travail. L’interprétation est aussi quelque chose que je fais bien sûr, mais ce n'est pas mon premier job, je n'ai jamais vraiment investi du temps dans l'amélioration de ma technique ou dans la pratique. D'autre part, je dois admettre que je suis un "control freak", alors, j'ai tendance à garder un œil sur tous les aspects de l'ensemble du processus de création, des arrangements à la production, l'ingénierie.…

Trouves-tu ton inspiration facilement ou as-tu besoin de conditions spéciales pour qu’elle apparaisse ?

Bonne question, la réponse est assez complexe. Trouver l'inspiration est quelque chose qui devient plus difficile chaque jour. Tout a été dit et fait dans la musique Pop/Rock et plus généralement dans la musique. Les meilleur chansons ont déjà été écrites... La musique populaire que nous connaissons a été utilisée pendant presque un siècle, sans parler de la révolution technologique et du marché de la musique de ces dernières décennies, qui a incroyablement élargi l'offre de toutes sortes de musique. Ecrire quelque chose d'intéressant dans les années 2000 est une tâche difficile. Chaque jour, je fais de mon mieux pour rester loin des clichés, des formule toutes faites ou du commun dans la musique contemporaine, même dans le genre appelé Westcoast Music, je cherche toujours des surprises...
Personnellement, je pense qu'il n'y a pas de conditions particulières pour trouver l'inspiration, même une petite chose peut être l'étincelle, certains de mes meilleurs titres ont été composés quand rien de spécial ne se passait, mais plus sûrement, c'est quelque chose que vous reconnaissez, que vous ne pouvez pas truquer ou contrôler. Bien sûr, être un compositeur spécialisé peut aider, surtout lors de l'écriture pour un projet spécifique.

Si je regarde à travers le passé, ton deuxième album "THIS MOMENT" a été pour moi une étape importante, car elle met en lumière les différents aspects de ton travail, une image variée de ta créativité musicale. Partages-tu ma vision ?

Merci et oui, tu as certainement raison. C'est ma vision de cet album, et je pense aussi qu'il contient certains de mes meilleurs titres. Il y a une sorte d 'état de grâce autour de cet album, cela ne se passe pas tout le temps.

Et je sens différentes racines/différents horizons musicales derrière (Jazz, AOR, Bossa Nova, Musique Westcoast).

Je suis totalement d'accord. Etre arrangeur dans ma vie musicale m’a exposé à pratiquement n'importe quel genre de musique, depuis le début. J'ai toujours écouté un large éventail de genres, allant du Jazz, à la Pop, au Rock, la Musique Classique, les compositeurs de films, etc.… je suis heureux que cela se ressente à l'écoute de cet album.

Il t’a permis de conclure un deal au Japon aussi, si je ne me trompe pas ?

Tu as raison. Le label japonais Vivid Sound Corporation a réédité l’album et a redistribué le CD dans une édition de luxe, avec une interview imprimée (traduite en japonais) et quelques titres bonus.

De retour à ton dernier album, il y a beaucoup de musiciens sur scène avec toi, c'était différent pour toi de gérer tous ces musiciens en comparaison avec le travail de studio ?

Oui, c'est une situation très différente. Sur scène, il y a une interaction beaucoup plus importante entre les musiciens et aussi entre eux et moi. Les qualités humaines sont aussi importantes que les compétences musicales.

Une belle production ... Par toi ? Ou Riziero Bixio ?

Eh bien, la production d'un album live est quelque chose de différent que de la production en studio, en fait axé réellement sur la post-production. Riziero et moi travaillons ensemble depuis 20 ans, il est un ami très spécial et mon batteur préféré, mais il y a beaucoup plus: il a également travaillé comme ingénieur du son dans le passé et il connaît ma musique mieux que quiconque. Le studio est son environnement naturel. Il a mis beaucoup d'énergie dans ce projet, en prenant soin de chaque aspect dans sa globalité, je n'aurais pas pu y arriver sans lui. Il a été naturel pour moi de penser à lui comme le producteur de cet album.

Quels sont tes projets dans un proche avenir ?

En plus de mon travail habituel en tant qu'arrangeur, je rassemble quelques idées pour mon prochain album studio, qui sera éventuellement réalisé dans le début de l'été 2012. Il sera plus dans un style musical "Adult-Contemporary" avec quelques surprises et invités.

Merci beaucoup Marco pour avoir partager du temps avec nous sur Cool Night, j'espère que tu seras de retour bientôt, nous sommes de grands fans de ton talent, sans oublier un hommage au grand Andrea Sanchini.

Je le ferai. Andrea est le principal interprète de cet album et un bon ami, nous avons réalisé beaucoup de choses ensemble dans un laps de temps de 10 ans. Il appréciera et vous passes le salut également.

Among the best 2011 albums, “Things and Moments Live” by Marco Taggiasco & Friends is without any doubt on the podium. A perfect opportunity for us to spend some time with this great gentleman and talk about his update. Thanks to Cristina for his precious help.

Hi Marco, a great honor for us that you’re back on cool night with a great surprise, a new album, furthermore a live album (Things and Moments Live). Can you tell us more about the making-of this amazing project ?

Thanks Olivier, it's my pleasure. As far as the new record, the idea was to give some songs a chance to be shared with the audience. I had some unreleased stuff and I also had the songs from my first cd, which was a kind of experiment, made with a limited budget and a big use of programming. We all always wanted to hear those songs with the energy of a full band playing live.

It must be nice giving all your songs a new twist ?

Sure. I adapted the original arrangements of the recorded songs but still making them recognizable. My idea of a live show is to give the audience the same fullness of the recorded material, adding the thrill of a live performance, the personality of the players etc.,

We can easily use the word “surprises”, cause we find some videos and unreleased songs on “Things and Moments Live”, specialy, “Breathless” and “Wish On A Star”. New materials or songs that not taken place into “Thousand Things” (2004) & “This Moment” (2008) albums ?

The two unreleased female ballads are songs I wrote at the end of the nineties, I was trying to find them a publisher, but it didn't happen, so they stayed in the drawer for some years. When I recorded Thousand Things, we felt they didn't fit the project, cause it came out with a typical "eighties pop" flavor and Andrea's vocals gave it a strong character. In 2008, when we were releasing my 2nd album, we felt those songs a bit outdated for the project so they still remained untaken, but I always thought they were good songs. The opportunity of the show seemed the right chance to share them with the audience.

Both are performed by Daphne Nisi. Few words about her.

I picked up Daphne among a roster of well known and regarded singers, that nevetheless didn't caught my attention. Her voice did. I really liked her from the start and wanted her to be part of the project. Daphne is really talented and has a musicianship and a respect for this job that I've only found in the great ones. Like me, she's a perfectionist and working with her, in studio and on stage, is a breeze. I'm sure we'll work together again and possibly she will perform on my next record.

"Healing Rain" is a real groovy song performed by the Danish Westcoast/Funk singer Claus Leonardt (great voice). Can you tell us your meeting with him and the idea behing this tune ?

I met Claus in 2005 or so, when I was in Copenhagen recording with danish singer songwriter Anne Marie Bush. Claus is a gifted singer, he's got a real wide expressive range: he can be very modern, which is what I need, and very classical at the same time. He's a good songwriter too. When he heard the demo of my song, he wanted to try to make "his" vocal version, I liked the result so much that I invited him to perform the song on stage.

Of course, we can’t forget and we‘re so happy to ear “Got To Believe (this time)” a collaboration title with Robbie Dupree (we know here he likes very much your city, l.o.l). Easy To work with him ? 

Yes, of course. Robbie is a seasoned music person, and working with him in studio has been great fun and pleasure for both. The song we wrote happened to be quite a hit, being apprecciated even beyond our expectations, so we decided to include it on the concert tracklist.

You’re an arranger, a producer, a songwriter, a pianist and a keyboard player. For you a natural expression way for your whole talents or an obligate way to create skillfully your craft ?

Well, I have to say that I'm mostly an arranger and a producer. Composing and songwriting is also part of my work. Playing is something I do of course, but is not my first job, I really never invested in improving technique and practicing. On the other hand, I must admit I'm a "control freak", so I tend to keep an eye on every aspect of the whole process, from arrangements to production, engineering etc.

Do you easily find your inspiration or do you need some specials condition to make it alive ?

Good question, and quite complex answer. Finding inspiration is something that becomes harder every day. Everything has been said and done in pop/rock music and more generally in music. Best songs are already been written... Popular music as we know it has been around for almost a century, not to mention the technology and market revolution of the last decades, which incredibly expanded the offer of music of all kinds. Writing something interesting in the 2000s is a hard task. Everyday I do my best to stay away from patterns, clichés and formula-songs, all very common in contemporary music, even the so-called westcoast genre, I always look for surprises...
I personally think there are no particular conditions to find inspiration, even a little thing can be the sparkle, some of my best stuff has been written when nothing special was happening, but surely it's something you recognize and you can't fake or control. Of course, being a skilled composer or songwriter can help, especially when writing for a specific project.

If I look back through the past, your second album "This Moment" was for me a milestone, cause it brings to light different sides of your work, a varied picture of your musical creativity. Do you share my vision ?

Thank you and yes, you're definetly right. That's my vision of the record, and I also think that it holds some of my best material. There's a kind of "state of grace" around it, it doesn't happen all the time.

And I feel different musical roots/backgrounds behind (Jazz, AOR, Bossa Nova, Westcoast Music).

I totally agree. Being an arranger, in my music life I've been exposed to virtually any kind of music since the beginning. I always listened to a wide range of genres spanning from jazz, pop, rock, classical, film composers etc. I'm happy that it shows when listening to the album.

It allowed you a Japan deal too, if I’m not wrong ?

You're right. Japanese label Vivid Sound Corporation reprinted and redistributed the CD in a deluxe edition, with a printed interview (translated in Japanese) and a couple of bonus tracks.

Back to your last album, there’s many musicians on stage with you, It was different for you to manage all these musicians as compared with studio works ?

Yes, it's quite different situation. On stage there's much more interaction between the players and also between them and myself. Human qualities become as important as the music skills.

A fine production… By you ? Or Riziero Bixio ?

Well, producing a live album is something different than producing in the studio, being actually focused on post production. Riziero and I have been working together since 20 years, he's a very special friend of mine and my first choice drummer, but there's a lot more: he also worked as sound engineer in the past, and he knows my music better than anyone else. And the studio is his natural environment. He put a lot of energy in this project, taking care of every aspect of the whole thing, couldn't have done it without him. It's been natural for me to think about him as the record producer.

What are your plans for the nearest future ?

Besides my usual work as arranger, I'm putting together some stuff for my next studio album, which will be possibly out in the early summer of 2012. It will be more adult-contemporary oriented with some surprises and guests.

Sonic Station : Nouvelle bombe scandinave

Une nouvelle sensation devrait débarquée l'année prochaine de Suède (encore... vous allez me dire), leur nom Sonic Station, le groupe nous promet un parfait mix entre Westcoast Music et AOR. Très prometteur, ils sont signés chez Frontiers Records qui annonce leur premier album éponyme pour le 24 février 2012 en Europe et le 28 février pour l'Amérique de Nord.

Ce nouveau projet est mené par Alexander Kronbrink (guitariste, compositeur et producteur), fan d'artistes ou groupes comme Lee Ritneour, Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins, David Foster ou Jay Graydon : "J'ai toujours été intéressé par les guitaristes qui ont la technique pour jouer du Jazz à la Pop, du Country au Hard Rock. J'ai écouté beaucoup de musique réalisée par les guitaristes de sessions américains tels que Steve Lukather, Michael Landau et Dann Huff. C'est ce type de jeu de guitare qui m'a le plus influencé."

Dès le début, le projet Sonic Station a clairement été basé dans la musique AOR des années 80 (influencé par Toto, Mr. Mister et Journey) et le son de la Côte Ouest Américaine, d'Airplay à Chicago. "L'accent est mis sur la mélodie et le son de Sonic Station est un mélange minutieux et passionnant de Pop, de Rock et de Jazz", explique Kronbrink. Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the signing to the label of a brand new Artist SONIC STATION for the release of their self titled debut album on February 24th 2012 in Europe and February 28th in North America.

SONIC STATION is a new Westcoast-AOR Project put together by Alexander Kronbrink (a Swedish guitarist, composer and producer). Alexander is a young musician who learned his skills playing with Smooth Jazz star Jonathan Fritzén. Later on – after being introduced to Lee Ritenour - Alexander started to see a clearer direction in his playing. Through Ritenour he discovered the music of such giants as Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins, composer and producer David Foster and guitarist Jay Graydon, among others. Alexander says: “I have always been interested in guitarists with the ability to play everything from Jazz, to Pop, to Country, to Hard Rock. I have listened a lot to American session guitarists such as Steve Lukather, Michael Landau and Dan Huff. I guess that type of guitar playing is what have influenced me the most.”

From the very beginning the SONIC STATION project has been based in the 80’s AOR music (influenced by Toto, Mr. Mister and Journey) and the West Coast-sound of Airplay and Chicago. The resulting album “SONIC STATION” is an expressive and warm record, where each song has an obvious and immediate hit feeling. “The focus is on melody and the SONIC STATION sound is a meticulous and exciting mixture of Pop, Rock and Jazz”, explains Kronbrink. To get the most quality out of each track Alexander, who composed ten of the songs and also produced and arranged the whole record, engaged four singers with different styles and voices: Marika Willstedt (from the Swedish TV show “Så ska det låta”), Magnus Bäcklund (member of the Swedish duo “Fame”), Kristoffer Fogelmark and Tove Lo.

There are many musicians working on the album but the three contributing the most are Alexander’s close friends Jonathan Fritzén (on keyboards – a smooth Jazz solo artist who reached #1 on the Billboard Indicator Smooth Jazz Chart), Henrik Linder (on bass – Dirty Loops, Work of Art) and Aron Mellergård (on drums – Dirty Loops). All of them are accomplished musicians and gave their contribution for the final result. “I definitely think SONIC STATION will have a life on stage and I expect that we will be able to do some shows in the coming months” concludes Alexander Kronbrink.

Le nouvel album du Michael Thompson Band (MTB) sera réalisé sur Frontiers Records. Il est annoncé pour le 24 février 2012 en Europe et le 28 février pour l'Amérique du Nord. "FUTURE PAST" en sera le titre.

En 1988, après avoir travaillé à l'obtention d'un deal avec son groupe Slang, le guitariste Michael Thompson a finalement obtenu une signature sur le label Geffen Records pour réaliser un album intitulé "HOW LONG", sous le sigle MTB (Michael Thompson Band). Sur "HOW LONG" de prestigieux musiciens de studio apparurent en guests, en particulier le batteur Terry Bozzio, le chanteur Moon Calhoun (ex The Strand), Pat Torpey (futur batteur pour Mr Big), le bassiste Jimmy Haslip, John Elefante (Kansas), Bobby Kimball (Toto), Michael Lardie et Wyn Davis (du groupe Great White, qui aussi produirent l'album). Les compositeurs venaient du monde de l'AOR comme Jeff Paris, Mark Spiro, Billy Trudel et Brett Walker.

En date d'aujourd'hui "HOW LONG" est encore considéré comme l'une des plus grandes réalisations dans un registre High Tech AOR / Westcoast, avec une superbe production et un gros travail de composition. "Je pense que l'album a résisté à l'épreuve du temps avec son lot de bonnes chansons et de grandes interprétations. Il a été sincère et je pense que les gens réagissent à la musique qui vient du cœur. Je suis content que beaucoup de fans de Rock Mélodique place dans leurs listes ce disque parmi leurs favoris", explique Michael Thompson.
"HOW LONG" a été réédité en 2007 avec 3 titres bonus et a permis de débuter une relation entre Michael et Frontiers Records, qui apporte enfin sa contribution avec la parution du nouvel album du Michael Thompson Band pour le début de 2012. "J'ai essayé de garder "FUTURE PAST" dans le même esprit que "HOW LONG". J'espère que les gens vont entendre la progression naturelle de ma musique et apprécier ce nouvel album, autant que le premier", poursuit Michael. "Bien que 22 ans représente un écart important, la musique a été enregistrée avec le même feeling et le même état d'esprit que j'ai toujours eu".

Pour ce nouvel album, Michael a fait équipe avec le génial chanteur Larry King (Soleil Moon). "Larry a apporté une approche nouvelle et plus Rock pour MTB, mais aussi une marque de fabrique pour la composition des mélodies, qui sont toujours présentes dans cet album "FUTURE PAST". Selon les mots de Michael Thompson : "Quand je recherchais un chanteur pour ce nouvel album, je me suis dit : Quel est le meilleur chanteur de Rock qui je connaisse, et une seule personne est venue à mon esprit - Larry King. Ce gars a une gamme phénoménale et une texture qui va parfaitement avec mes guitares. Nous avons commencé à écrire des chansons ensemble il y a un peu plus d'un an auparavant et à partir de la première chanson, "Can't Be Right", je savais que nous avions quelque chose de spécial !".
Le line up de 2012 est complété avec Khari Parker à la batterie et Alan Berliant à la basse. La production de "FUTURE PAST" est juste impeccable et l'album est destiné à devenir bientôt un autre classique de la musique AOR. "Je pense que le titre résume tout", FUTURE PAST", conclut Michael. "Larry et moi sommes tous deux de grands fans de Rock Classique et de Rock Mélodique/AOR, alors nous avons tout naturellement infuser cet amour dans la musique que nous écrivons. "How Long" was reissued in 2007 with 3 bonus tracks and started a relationship between Michael Thompson and Frontiers Records, which finally brings the anticipated release of the new Michael Thompson Band album in early 2012. “I've tried to keep the new MTB album "Future Past" in the same spirit as "How Long". I'm hoping that people will hear the natural progression of my music and appreciate the new record as much as the first one,” continues Michael. "Although 22 years is quite a gap time-wise the music was recorded with the same feeling and spirit as I always had".

For the new album Michael teamed up with the awesome singer Larry King from Soleil Moon. Larry brought a new and more rocking approach to the MTB sound, but certainly the trademark elements of songwriting and melodies are still to be found in the new album “Future Past”. In Michael Thompson words: "When I was considering singers for this new record I said to myself “Who is the best rock singer that I know?” and only one person came to mind - Larry King. The guy has such a phenomenal range and texture and it goes perfectly with my guitars. We started writing songs together a little over a year ago and from the first song, "Can't Be Right", I knew we had something special!”

MTB 2012 lineup is rounded up by Khari Parker on drums and Alan Berliant on bass. "Larry brought them into the picture and it was a pleasure for me to work with some knew guys that I wasn't familiar with. It brought a fresh approach to the music", says Michael.

The production of "Future Past" is just flawless and the album is destined to become soon another AOR music classic. “I think that the title kind of says it all - "Future Past"" concludes Michael. D'anciens titres, ainsi que de nouveaux seront donc incorporés. Il va être difficile pour le groupe de choisir quand on connaît les classiques du groupe que le public souhaite entendre.

Dans un autre registre si on se penche au plus près des déclarations de Joe, il ne serait pas impossible de voir un DVD réalisé. On n'a plus qu'à croisé les doigts.

Initialement réalisé pour le Japon, "BROTHERLY LOVE" l'album de Mike Porcaro va être distribué aux USA. Il sera proposé en 2 CD avec un livret de 16 pages contenant des photos, des annotations du journaliste Greg Rule et des commentaires de Mike.

Enregistré live en mars 2002 à Koblenz (Allemagne), ce concert hommage à Jeff Porcaro mélange titres

The new US Version of "Brotherly Love" from Mike Porcaro is available now. It is a double CD with 16 page color booklet containing additional photos, liner notes by journalist Greg Rule, and track by track commentary by Mike and David Garfield.

Originally recorded live in Koblenz, Germany in March 2002 as a Tribute Concert to his brother and world renown drummer Jeff Porcaro. This double CD set has been long in the making including some additional overdubs and extensive re-mixing and mastering.

"JUNGLE FEVER" en 1978 marqué par une somptueuse production et proposant un Jazz Fusion de haut calibre ("Windsong", "Jungle Fever"), sans oublier un groove Westcoast Music parfait ("Emerald City").

Ensuite "HIGH HEAR" (1979) qui glisse doucement vers le Smooth Jazz avec toujours ce groove

Ces deux albums seront réédités au Japon à partir du 18 janvier 2012.

Prior to forming with the Buzz Feiten Larsen / Feiten Band who made two beautiful album Westcoast Music, Neil Larsen made two solo albums. "Jungle Fever" in 1978 marked a lavish production and offering a high quality Jazz Fusion ("Windsong", "Jungle Fever"), plus a perfect groove Westcoast Music ("Emerald City").
Then "High Gear" (1979) that glides gently to the Smooth Jazz with always the groove calif if typed. Both albums will be reissued in Japan from January 18, 2012.

The year was 1988. Eric Carmen had just staged a major comeback with "Hungry Eyes" a song written by John DeNicola and Franke Previte for the feature film Dirty Dancing. It hit #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. With that success, Eric turned to longtime songwriting partner Dean Pitchford. The song they wrote together was "Make Me Lose Control". It rocketed up the charts and managed to top "Hungry Eyes", scoring an impressive #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song spent 13 weeks in the Top 40 along with three weeks at #1 on the adult contemporary chart.

The time was ripe for another smash hit. Arista honcho Clive Davis had a feeling Eric was onto something with "Hungry Eyes". He suggested Eric sing some songs by other songwriters instead of limiting himself to his own. That logic sounds faulty considering Eric's own-penned song charted higher, but back to the story.

"I met Diane Warren at a party sometime in the late ‘80s and we really hit it off," explains Eric. "We found we had a lot in common and I really liked her quirky personality. She and I would talk on the phone and she’d play me songs she was working on, and ask me if I thought they ‘sucked.’ Most of them were very, very good."

"There was one song of Diane’s that I liked called "Boardwalk Baby". Diane told me she had been inspired to write it after hearing "Make Me Lose Control". We booked my buddy Steve Lukather to play guitar, and Mark Williams—son of John Williams, the great film composer—to play drums, and Diane and I sang the vocals. Diane, by the way, is a great singer! She’s got a really cool voice, kinda raspy but very emotional. She reminds me a little of me. I used to tell her she should do a record of her own stuff. Her reply: ‘I wouldn’t waste a good song on me.’ She could actually sing a lot of her songs better than the people who recorded them."

So what happened, you might ask? According to Eric, “Clive didn’t like it. We were shocked. And bummed out."

Voici une jolie pépite de Westcoast Music/AOR qui sera rééditée au Japon prochainement.

En 1991, Tom Scott mettait un peu de côté son Jazz Fusion pour offrir cet album qui penchait totalement dans la musique Calif. "If You're Not the One For Me" ouvrait de belle manière cet album avec un superbe duo entre Bill Champlin et Brenda Russell. Deux trésors à ne pas laisser passer "Keep This Love Alive" avec la géniale voix de David Pack et "Only A Hearbeat Away" interprété par Will Lee, à écouter de soir dans sa voiture, magique. Le très bon "Reason For Rain" signé Champlin. L'explosif instrumentale "Giving Our Best", le créatif "Kilimanjaro" et le Jazz Classique embrumé "Whenever You Dream of Me" de Diane Schuur complètent superbement cet album.

put a little aside his Jazz Fusion to deliver this album that leaned fully into the Westcoast music.
"If You're Not the One For Me" opens the album in fine style with a beautiful duet between Bill Champlin and Brenda Russell. Two treasures not to miss "Keep This Love Alive" with the great voice of David Pack and "Only A Heartbeat Away" played by Will Lee, listening to night in his car, magical. The very good "Reason For Rain" signed Champlin. The explosive instrumental "Giving Our Best", the creative "Kilimanjaro" and the Jazz Classic foggy "Whenever You Dream of Me" by Diane Schuur beautifully complement this album. Although considered lately to be a pop reclusive, Richard Marx is already working on album No. 23. The "Right Here Waiting" singer/songwriter, known for writing a bundles of AC hits for a laundry list of big names including the Luther Vandross’ Grammy winning “Dance With My Father,” pumps out A Christmas EP as a kickstarter to his upcoming full-length holiday project for 2012. One thing’s for sure: the sampler is a festive appetizer that stays true to Marx’s style. "Christmas Spirit" conjures the subtleties of Mariah’s "All I Want For Christmas Is You" while masked with a Phil Spector Wall of Sound glisten. He even goes for reverent hymn remakes on "O Holy Night" and "Silent Night" without sounding too much like a Vienna Boy graduate. Much of the arrangements feel like tasteful performances that either would be transplanted on a best-of-Marx album or on a hipper Nashville pop set. On "I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day", the digital EP’s obvious showstopper, the atmosphere is enshrouded with serenading strings and Coldplay visuals. Although his voice never suspends to the clouds on its enrapturing chorus, Marx settles for a comfy mid-flight performance that still oozes heartthrob glamour. Even with the EP’s brevity, A Christmas EP is as good as a holiday EP will ever get.

Steve Lukather rejoindra le G3 avec Joe Satriani et Steve Vai pour des concerts en Australie et Nouvelle Zélande à partir de mars et avril 2012.

Simon Phillips est actuellement en tournée au Japon avec le Hiromi Trio Project (Hiromi/piano et Randy Jackson/bass), quelques shows seront également planifiés aux Etats-Unis et en Europe.

David Roberts, 2ème partie : Better Late Than Never

Il paraissait totalement utopique de revoir ce nom associé à un album contemporain, tant David Roberts semblait collé à un "one hit wonder", grâce à son mythique "ALL DRESSED UP". Pourtant l’artiste effectua un retour à la fois inespéré et rarement vu dans le music business, avec il est vrai, le titre le plus parfait qu’on puisse trouver "BETTER LATE THAN NEVER".

La suite c’est David qui l’explique:

On m'a souvent demandé pourquoi je n'ai pas poursuivis ma carrière en tant qu'interprète dans la musique, la raison est très simple. Je dois vous avouez que dans le milieu des années 80, il s’est produit une véritable transition qui a eu lieu dans l’industrie musicale. Ce fameux et populaire son "Westcoast", a été remplacé par l’invasion de la Power Pop Britannique. Les maisons de disques se sont lancées dans une chasse a tout ce qui venait du Royaume-Uni, signant des artistes de ce pays à tour de bras et à l’inverse en jetant un vaste éventail d'artistes qui étaient les piliers de ce style musicale.

Dans le même temps, après "ALL DRESSED UP", ma carrière comme auteur-compositeur était lancée et j’ai décidé de concentrer toute mon énergie dans cette voie. Après tout, mon objectif à long terme était de réussir dans ce milieu. Donc, pour moi, les 15 années suivantes (qui suivirent mon premier album) furent consacrées à mon travail en tant que songwriter pour Warner Brother Music Publishing. J’ai réalisé de nombreuses chansons pour des artistes ou groupes comme Starship, Bad English, Lee Aaron, Signal, House Of Lords, Jimmy Barnes ou Boulevard pour n’en citer que quelque uns et j’ai collaboré avec de grands compositeurs.

Au fil des années, mon nom était souvent lié avec Greg Mathieson, Steve Lukather ou Mike Porcaro, lors d’interviews, d’articles ou revues concernant la réalisation d' "ALL DRESSED UP", qui était très apprécié dans certains cercles.

J'ai été complètement abasourdi lorsque "ALL DRESSED UP" devint culte pour de nombreuses personnes, notamment l’album favori parmi les amateurs de "Westcoast Music". Il a fallu attendre qu’un fan m’envoi un courrier, ou il soulignait que mon premier album était à vendre pour 300 $ sur eBay, pour que je commence vraiment à réaliser, que ma musique avait réellement touché beaucoup de personnes, d'une façon dont je n’avais jamais imaginé et qu’elle intéressait encore tant de gens.

Pendant tout ce temps, je n'ai jamais cessé de chanter et d’écrire, aussi lorsque l'occasion s'est présentée pour enregistrer "BETTER LATE THAN NEVER", j'ai sauté dessus. Soudain, ce qui était vieux était redevenu nouveau et les fans qui avaient envie de ce son familier, qu’ils avaient au fond de leur mémoires, devenaient à nouveau présent. C’est maintenant toute une nouvelle génération d'amateurs de musique qui est exposée à ma musique. Une nouvelle fois c’est Greg Mathieson qui est à la barre du projet. Comme d’habitude, il a recruté des musiciens de renommée mondiale, Abraham Laboriel, Michael Landau, Mike Baird et Luis Conte qui jouent sur 5 chansons. La moitié du projet a été réalisé par Fred Mollin en utilisant certains des meilleurs musiciens de Nashville.

Les gens m’ont souvent demandé d'enregistrer à nouveau, mon désir personnel l’était aussi. La pensée profonde derrière ce titre "BETTER LATE THAN NEVER", c'est d’avouer qu'il n'y a plus d'excuses et même si ce fut à long, que j’ai trop tardé, je suis enfin en mesure de tenir mes promesses. Avec ces dernières, j’ai essayé de capturer l'essence de l'ensemble du projet, car nous savons tous qu’il est facile d'abandonner et qu'il y a de nombreux obstacles dans la vie, mais la persévérance est payante à la fin.

J'ai enregistré la chanson "Stay With Me Tonight" composée avec John Waite ("Missing You"). Initialement, elle était prévue pour l'un de ses projets, mais beaucoup de personnes m'ont souvent demandé de l'enregistrer. J'espère que je l’ai bien réalisé, parce que John est un grand chanteur.
"What I've Been Missing" est l'une de mes préférées. C’est une histoire qui raconte les perspectives d’une personne qui vie et apprend le dur chemin. "Before I Go" a été enregistré par Starship sur leur album "KNEE DEEP IN THE HOOPLA". Sur mon dernier album, je fournis ma propre version, un peu plus actualisée. "Be Gentle With My Heart" fut co-composée par Randy Goodrum, rehaussée par Michael Landau qui joue magnifiquement de la guitare. Au niveau des paroles "Eighth Wonder" est ma chanson la plus poétique que j'ai jamais écrite.

Également disponible, un DVD pour Chicago "LIVE IN CONCERT" (2003) toujours en format Blu-Ray.

After his US R&B success with "Reach For It" (1977) and "Dukey Stick" (1978), "Dream On" was jazz'n'funk pioneer George Duke's eighth album for Epic Records. Released in 1982, "Dream On" was one of George's best selling albums for Epic, a US Top 20 R&B, Top 10 Jazz and Top 100 pop charted album. The single, "Shine On" was also George's fourth biggest R&B-charted single, a success on the dance music charts and George's second highest pop chart entry during his Epic years. The master keyboardist was the primary writer on most of the album's ten tracks with the exception of the title tune, co-penned by Felton Pilate of Con-Funk-Shun fame. Dream On's line-up includes Leon Ndugu Chancler on drums, Byron Miller on bass and Michael Sembello on guitar. Renowned vocalists Jean Carn and Flora Purim are also featured on "Son Of Reach For It (Funky Dream)" a continuation of George's 1978 classic "Reach For It". Key cuts on "Dream On" include the funky "Ride On Love" another US R&B charted single and a remake of "Someday" which George had recorded in 1975.

"Rendezvous" was jazz'n'funk pioneer George Duke's eleventh and final album for Epic Records. Released in 1984, "Rendezvous" was produced by George, who wrote or co-wrote all but two of the tracks. Featured musicians on the album included longtime musical associates Byron Miller on bass, Leon Ndugu Chancler on drums, Paulinho Da Costa on percussion, Josie James and Lynn Davis on background vocals, Jerry Hey on trumpet and Michael Sembello on guitar with special guests Stanley Clarke, Steve Ferrone (of Average White Band) on drums, Nathan East (on bass). With a strong Earth, Wind & Fire influence on several tunes such as "Stay Awhile" "Got To Get Back To Love" and "She Can Wait Forever" other key cuts on the album include the Brazilian-flavoured "Ipanema Lady" and the mellow smooth-jazz-styled, "Thinking Of You".

Bobby Kimball devrait enregistrer un nouvel album solo et il le réaliserait sur Frontiers Records cette semaine. Les chansons seront composées par Robert Säll de Work Of Art. Ce dernier a déjà écrit certains des titres sur l'album "KIMBALL/JAMISON" et c'est ainsi que les deux artistes se sont rencontrés.

"On m'a demandé par l'intermédiaire du patron de Frontiers Records de chanter sur un nouveau CD, avec des chansons de Robert et une grande part de Work Of Art sera sur cet album. J'adore ce groupe et leur nouveau CD "IN PROGRESS" est fantastique. Je devrais avoir terminé les vocaux dans quelques mois et cela signifie que la date de sortie sera d'environ 4 mois plus tard. Beaucoup de personnes comparent Work Of Art à Toto et je suis sûr que cela va être un projet très amusant à réaliser. Bobby Kimball said I'll be starting a new Solo CD for Frontiers Records this week. The tracks were written and produced by Robert Säll from the "Work Of Art" band from Scandinavia. Robert wrote some of the songs on the "Kimball/Jamison" CD, and that's how we met. I was asked by the owner of Frontiers Records to sing the songs on a new CD with Robert's songs, and most of Work Of Art will be on the CD. I love this band, and their new CD, called "In Progress", is fantastic. I should have the vocals done within a couple of months, and that means the release date will be about 4 months later. Many people have compared "Work Of Art to Toto", and I'm sure this is going to be a very fun project to be on. I'll keep you updated on the progress of this new CD. Kenji Sano "Culture Chamaleon"

Kenji Sano est connu pour être le bassiste de Kalapana, le plus populaire des groupes Hawaiian d'AOR/Westcoast et bien sûr pour avoir été dans le All-Star Band de Jay Graydon.

Au début de cette année, avant le séisme de mars au Japon, il était planifié la sortie de son premier album solo pour le mois d'avril, mais il fut reporté. En août, la date de sortie révisée fut annoncée pour le 14 septembre 2011, mais il fut encore reporté. Enfin, cette fois c'est la bonne.

Cet album solo comprend trois titres originaux de Kenji, ainsi que 11 classiques. L'album débute par "Double Love", initialement composé par le groupe Crackin et chanté par Arno Lucas (chanteur original du groupe). Vous serez heureux de savoir que Joseph Williams chante "Got To You Get Into My Life" des Beatles et Bill Champlin "Slippery When Wet", initialement interprété par The Commodores et "If You Want Me To Stay" à l'origine de Sly & The Family Stone.
Jay Graydon, Carlos Rios et David T Walker sont en guests. Un CD a ajouté à sa collection pour les Westcoast Music/AOR lovers.

Crossfade "Secret Love"

Déjà 7 années se sont écoulées depuis leur premier opus, qui avait laissé entrevoir de superbes choses.

C'était en 2004 que Crossfade réalisait son premier album "WHITE ON BLUE", ce dernier marqué pas de superbes titres, d'autres moins et une production impressionnante qui semble être devenue la chasse gardée des groupes scandinaves de ces dernières années. Bien sûr, les influences des géants comme Toto, Kenny Loggins, Pages, Steely Dan, Eagles, Ambrosia transpiraient.

Aux commande de Crossfade, Lars Hallbäck, Richard Stenström, les frères Lindvall (Per & Sven) et le chanteur Göran Edman sont annoncés pour un retour prévu le 25 novembre 2011 grâce à "SECRET LOVE", leur nouvel album.

Crossfade was formed...

...as a duo in the town of Skövde (Sweden) in 1999 when the musical paths of the peripheral acquaintances Lars Hallbäck and Richard Stenström crossed. Six months later, singer Göran Edman took his stand behind the microphone, introduced through a mutual friend. Along with drummer Per Lindvall and his brother Sven (bass) and the now classic "transitioning from the 60's to date" Crossfade sound was born. The music is often compared to and placed in the genres of Steely Dan, Toto, Sting, Eagles, Chicago and the Doobies. Add to this, a full-blown horn section, percussion and background vocals and you have a stellar music production toolkit. Thoughtful lyrics have since day one been written by Eva Olsson. Since Crossfade yet to date has refrained from spending time on tours, the more time (seven years specifically) has been spent in the studio to put their sequel "Secret Love" on the map in late 2011.

The listeners will be met by lush harmonies, intricate chords, lavish keyboards and the Hallbäck signature guitar sound. Add to this the vocals by Göran Edman, ranging all the way from dynamic and nuanced up to massive choirs.

Lodgic "Nomatic Sands"

Groupe issu de Las Vegas et ayant tenté sa chance à Los Angeles durant la fin des années 70, Lodgic (notamment fondé par Mike & Billy Sherwood) proposait un crossover entre Prog. Rock et AOR.

Leur unique album "NOMADIC SANDS" fut réalisé en 1985. Il était co-produit par Steve Porcaro, David Paich et Tom Knox. Il est réédité et remasterisé pour l'occasion chez Yesterrock.

Lodgic was an American AOR group which consisted of some of the finest musicians from this musical genre including Mike and Billy Sherwood on vocals & keyboards and vocals & bass, and Jimmy Haun on guitars & vocals. They existed between 1977 and 1987.
Recorded in 1985, ‘Nomadic Sands’ was their only album being produced together with David Paich, Tom Knox and Steve Porcaro, and originally only released on vinyl on A&M Records. Next to the obvious influences by Yes and Toto, the band at the time also implemented sounds similar to the likes of Go West, Saga and Peter Gabriel.

After the split of Lodgic, Michael & Billy Sherwood together with Guy Allison formed World Trade; later on the members appeared on many productions including albums by Yes, Unruly Child, The Doobie Brothers, Yoso, The Key, Sheryl Crow, Air Supply and Cher.

Yesterrock with the help of Universal Music Germany now is re-releasing this sought after AOR gem for the first time on CD.

Pour la sortie mondiale du coffret "TIME START NOW - The DEFINITIVE ANTHOLOGY 75/11", Bill LaBounty nous a fait l'honneur de répondre à nos questions. Bill est l'un des monstres sacrés de la Westcoast Music avec son album éponyme de 1982 ainsi que "THE RIGHT DIRECTION" de 1991. Bill a une place toute particulière en France où l'on pu découvrir, à la radio française, le formidable morceau "Livin' It Up" dans les années 80. Outre ses talents de chanteur de "soft-rock", Bill est un excellent compositeur qui a écrit pour de quantités d'autres artistes. Enfin, il convient de saluer sa formidable carrière qui a commencé dans les années 70 jusqu'à nos jours sans oublier sa gentillesse légendaire.

Bill, tu as réalisé six albums (dont 3 albums dans les années 70) et un album par décennie. Pourquoi une si longue absence entre tes 3 derniers albums?

Ma carrière musicale au fil des années a été ce qu'on pourrait appeler de schizophrène. La plupart du temps je suis un artiste à la conduite très individuel, redevable seulement envers moi-même pour la direction que j’ai choisis de prendre. Les thèmes et genres dans lesquels j’ai investi ma musique était mon propre choix.

À d'autres moments j'ai choisi de m’investir dans une démarche commerciale en tant que compositeur pour d'autres artistes, que j'ai admiré et avec qui je suis devenu ami. Je dois avouer que mon choix de m'investir dans le métier de compositeur a été dicté par un choix économique et pas nécessairement par désir personnel. Mais j'aime et admire cet art noble qu'est le métier de compositeur. Cela a été ma principale source de revenus financiers, mais cela n’a pas été ma première passion. Sur le fonds, j'aime à penser que j'ai mis ma propre empreinte personnelle sur ce que je pouvais composer, même pour les autres.

Entre "THE RIGHT DIRECTION" et ton dernier album studio "BACK TO YOUR STAR", 18 années se sont écoulées, il était facile de revenir en studio et de réaliser ton propre album?

Lorsque je me suis mis à travailler sur "THE RIGHT DIRECTION", j'ai réalisé que je devais mettre de côté les habitudes, les outils et les techniques que j’utilisais en tant qu’auteur-compositeur commerciale qui me servait à créer la musique et les paroles. Cela a pris un certain temps. Mais pour en revenir au retour en studio, ce fut relativement facile, un grand merci à mon co-producteur Robbie Dupree, qui a effectué le suivi des dates très sereinement et professionnellement, dans une excellente ambiance, il a également contribué à la composition et à la planification de cet album.
"BACK TO YOUR STAR" est venu, comme vous le dites, bien des années plus tard. Pour ce disque je voulais prendre une approche moins commerciale pour les chansons et la musique. Dans l'intervalle entre "THE RIGHT DIRECTION" et mon dernier album, j'avais écris plusieurs singles qui furent numéros 1 ou rentrèrent dans le Top Ten pour d'autres artistes, également des musiques de film, et des cuts pour de nombreux albums d'artistes issus de la musique Country ou Pop. Finalement, si j'enregistrais un nouvel album solo, je voulais qu'il soit plus impressionniste, moins orienté Pop. J'ai été plus en phase sur ce que je voulais faire. Il était important pour moi d'utiliser les nombreux talentueux musiciens issus de la musique R&B que j'avais appris à connaître musicalement au fil des ans. Je voulais quelque chose à la fois de plus mordant et un groove plus laid-back, inhérent à des artistes de Memphis, de Muscle Shoals ou de la Nouvelle-Orléans.

Est-il Facile de planifier pour le studio tous ces grands musiciens qui sont venus jouer sur "BACK TO YOUR STAR"?

Il a été, heureusement, facile d'embaucher l'ensemble de mes musiciens préférés pour jouer sur "BACK TO YOUR STAR". Ces gars sont tous des joueurs très populaires et ils sont très demandés pour leurs technicités musicales, aussi, j’ai dû attendre parfois jusqu’à trois semaine pour les avoir, mais quand ils se sont rendus disponibles pour moi ils ont tout donné pour ma musique!

Sur ton dernier album "BACK TO YOUR STAR", il y a de nombreux titres brillants comme "HWY 85", "Cinderella", "California Turnaround", "Back To Your Star" et "Running On Fumes". Cette dernière est l'une de mes préférées. Peux-tu nous en dire plus sur cette chanson si groovy.

"Running On Fumes" est née d’un riff de guitare que Danny Parks et moi jouions dans mon studio. Danny était mon partenaire et co-producteur pour "Back To Your Star". Au niveau des paroles, cette chanson fait allusion à une histoire d'amour qui se termine en fumée, l'excitation du passé, etc... elle a aussi une actualité certaine en regard avec les réalités économiques et politiques de notre époque. Globalement, il s’agissait d'un titre agréable pour que le groupe groove dessus. Certaines de mes parties de guitares préférées sont jouées par Danny sur cette dernière.

Aux Etats-Unis, tes talents sont plus reconnus en tant que compositeur, est-ce frustrant de ne pas être reconnu comme un artiste à part entière?

En tant que compositeur, je pense que cette frustration naît lorsqu’un artiste ou que le producteur d’un album me demande de modifier substantiellement ou de changer carrément les paroles ou la musiques d’un morceau, pour s’adapter à certains besoins prédéfinit, en relation avec le thème du projet. Il semble que cela suit toujours pour moi la dilution de cette pureté musicale du début et c'est à ce moment que je veux dire "Non...vous ne pouvez pas faire cela".
Je n’ai jamais désiré l’adulation du public qui fait les grands performers. J’ai voulu monter sur scène et prendre mon pied pour moi si l’opportunité se présentait. Et jusqu’ici, j’ai toujours été capable de trouver l’occasion de le faire.

Ou puises-tu tes influences musicales?

Mes gouts musicaux préférés viennent du R&B des forties, fifties et sixties. Egalement du jazz qui était joué chez moi dans ma maison lorsque j’étais enfant (Cootie Williams, Nat Cole et Louis Armstrong). Adolescent, j’ai adoré Bob Dylan et l’invasion Pop Britannique comme le reste de ma génération. En tant que chanteur, je voulais imiter Ray Charles, Etta James, Marvin Gaye comme tant d’autres artistes l’ont fait. Plus tard, je fus connecté avec la musique de la vague Bebop comme Miles, Coltrane, Parker. La musique de Larry Carlton continue d’avoir un gros impact sur mes écoutes.

J’aime également Diana Krall, aujourd’hui j’aime bien des artistes Hip-Hop et d’intégrer aussi le phrasé d’artistes rap comme Common, Jay-Z ou Eminem ou d’autres dans mes paroles. J’aime bien Radiohead et j’ai toujours suivi ce que faisaient Donald Fagen et Walter Becker et bien sûr Steely Dan.

Quel est l’album dont tu es le plus fière?

Difficile de répondre! Mon éponyme de 1982 "BILL LaBOUNTY" a été la meilleure promotion pour de merveilleuses interprétations de la part de tant de grands artistes. Je tiens a remercier Russ Titelman pour son incroyable talent sur de nombreux aspects de ce disque.
Mais, il était aussi très bien construit et produit. Je viens de rendre visite à Russ à New York et j'ai passé du temps avec lui. Je suis heureux de dire qu'il est encore plein d'énergie et très impliqué avec beaucoup de grands artistes sur des projets très excitants.
Bien sûr, n'importe quel artiste trouve toujours son nouveau projet le meilleur et le plus excitant. Je travaille maintenant sur un nouvel album, dans un registre R&B et blues. Je suis très excité à ce sujet! Il sera composé de certains de mes anciens titres préférés, mélangés à des compositions flambant neuf dans une veine Blues. Je travaille à nouveau avec les meilleurs artistes de Blues et R&B. Et s'ajoute des contributions importantes de Larry Carlton et certains autres artistes en surprise.

Tu travailles principalement à Nashville, quels sont les artistes et les musiciens avec lesquels tu aimes travailler?

En studio, j'adore travailler avec les bassistes Michael Rhodes et David Hungate. Tommy Wells, Brian Fullen et Jack White sont trois de mes batteurs préférés là-bas. Larry Carlton et moi sommes des amis proches, nous partageons de nombreux projets musicaux et nous composons souvent ensemble. J'adore jouer et écrire avec mon ami Steve Wariner. J’aime également rencontrer de jeunes compositeur et artistes chaque jour comme Casey Wasner, Travis Carlton ou Patrick Nelson, pour n'en nommer que quelques-uns.

Tu travailles avec Robbie Dupree depuis plus de 30 ans, pourquoi ne pas réaliser un album en duo comme l’on fait George Benson et Al Jarreau récemment?

C'est quelque chose que je serais très heureux de faire! J'aime la musique de Robbie, son jeu, et l’a jouée. Tu peux mettre un grand OUI à côté de mon nom pour ce projet potentiel.

Tes albums "BILL LaBOUNTY" (1982) et "THE RIGHT DIRECTION"(1991) sont des standards de la Musique Westcoast. Peux-tu nous parler de la génèse de ces deux albums, devenus cultes pours les amoureux de Westcoast Music.

L’album "BILL LaBOUNTY" a commencé avec un appel de Russ Titelman, l'un des chefs d'A&R à mon label, Warner Brother. Russ était quelqu'un que je suivais au plus près pour son implication dans un grand nombre de classiques réalisés par des artistes comme James Taylor, Paul Simon et Randy Newman. Je pense que, pour briser la glace, Russ m'a dit qu'il aimerait composer avec moi. Mais, je crois qu'il était vraiment intéressé par mon matériel et mes capacités d’artistes. Je suis allé à son bureau et j’ai joué mes nouvelles chansons pour lui. A l'époque, j'avais une chanson : "Hot Rod Hearts" qui caracolait au sommet des charts et était interprétée par Robbie Dupree. Russ a aimé ce qu'il a entendu et a commencé à parler d'un possible album avec moi. J'ai été pour le moins très ouvert à cette idée. Les choses se sont mises en place à partir de là. Nous avons parlé de nos musiciens de session et artistes préférés. J'ai été présenté à Lenny Waronker et nous avons conclu un deal ensemble.

"THE RIGHT DIRECTION" a commencé avec un autre appel téléphonique que j'ai reçu d'un gars nommé Philipe Le Brass, un Français. Il m'a dit que j'avais une chanson qui passait fréquemment sur les radios françaises "Livin 'It Up". Il a dit que je devrais faire un autre album. Il pouvait aussi garantir des ventes substantielles si je le réalisais. Robbie Dupree venait de terminer un album créé de manière indépendante, j'ai tout de suite aimé sa production.
Je lui ai demandé s'il accepterait de co-produire un album avec moi. il a fait son super travail habituel d’organisation, apportant John "JR" Robinson et Neil Stubenhaus dans le projet. j'ai aussi inclus Philipe Le Brass dans le partenariat et nous avons commencé la création de "THE RIGHT DIRECTION". Je suis heureux d'être en mesure de vous dire que j'ai des plans pour une prochaine version remasterisée et un repackage de cet album. Il contiendra en plus quelques extras et des surprises.

Tu te souviens de cette géniale nuit à Paris. Tes sentiments à propos de ce show? (Le 30/09/2006 au Casino de Paris)

Ce show a été spécial pour moi pour plusieurs raisons. A côté d’un concert donné dans une des plus grandes villes du monde, il y avait un grand nombre de personnes de toutes les différentes parties de l'Europe qui y ont assisté. En outre, l'enthousiasme du public pour ma musique était si merveilleux! Je me souviens d’avoir reçu une ovation lors de mon intronisation, avant que je ne sois derrière le piano pour jouer. Ce sont des choses que vous n'oubliez pas. Robbie et sont groupe étaient en feu cette nuit là.

J'avais fais venir avec moi ma fille de treize ans à ce concert. Elle n'avait jamais vraiment compris ce que je faisais dans la vie. À la maison, la musique qu’elle me voyait réaliser, tournait autour de la composition. Je fais tout mon travail musical dans mon studio. Elle pensait surtout à son père comme un gars qui tourne autour de la maison dans son peignoir. Elle m'a entendu jouer et chanter ma propre musique pour la première fois sur une scène à Paris, et voyant que ma musique était acceptée et appréciée par ce public de connaisseurs pour la première fois, je pense que cela a été une immense révélation pour elle. Cela m'a procuré une grande joie de lui montrer cela.

As-tu récemment tourné au Japon ou en Asie?

J'ai rejoins Larry Carlton en avril dernier pour une tournée de deux semaines au Japon après le séisme et le tsunami. Nous avons été l'un des premiers groupes à effectuer une tournée après la catastrophe. Quelque part cela a été une aventure avec sept points de répliques alors que nous étions sur scène à Tokyo. Larry a un nouvel album qui est un hommage au son de Philadelphie. Larry m'a invité à chanter sur cet album : "Drownin 'In The Sea Of Love" et "Only The Srong Survive" qui sont deux des chansons que j'ai réalisé. Ces chansons pour Larry seront également présentes sur mon nouveau coffret pour Rhino-Warner.

Qui a eu l'idée de cette rétrospective de ta carrière avec ce coffret?

David Dutreuil est l'homme derrière mon nouveau coffret pour Rhino-Warner et derrière la réalisation de plusieurs autres grandes compilations toujours pour Rhino-Warner. Nile Rogers et Donny Hathaway sont deux de mes artistes favoris. Un répertoire complet et un son exceptionnel, grâce à Gaël Benjamin, qui consacre les efforts de David. Je suis heureux d'être inclus dans ces compilations.

Quel a été le processus de sélection pour les chansons inédites?

Être un compositeur actif, à côté des compositions que j'ai été assez chanceux de voir enregistrées par d'autres, m’a permis d’accumuler près d'un millier d'enregistrements en version démo de mes compositions. Parmi elles, se trouvent des petits bijoux de compositions sincères réalisées avec des musiciens, chanteurs et des personnes qui se sont impliquées dessus. Beaucoup de ces chansons continuent à être de grands succès et pourrait être intéressantes dans une perspective historique. Beaucoup aussi n'ont jamais vu la lumière, mais elles contiennent de toute façon des aspects intéressant. Pour mon coffret, j'ai essayé de choisir ces pistes qui étaient les plus sincères, venant de mon âme et contenait des prestations vocales et instrumentales qui pour moi valaient l'intérêt de mes fans. J'ai également composé une sorte de journal de souvenirs, chanson par chanson, sur l'écriture, l'enregistrement ou l'histoire personnelle de chaque piste pour quiconque s'intéresse à un aperçu de ce qui est la muse d'un auteur/compositeur/interprète de son travail et les moments où il a vécu pour cela.

For the worldwide release of the box "TIME START NOW - The DEFINITIVE ANTHOLOGY 75/11", Bill LaBounty did us the honor to answer our questions. Bill is one of the superstars of Westcoast Music with his 1982 self-titled album and "THE RIGHT DIRECTION" in 1991. Bill has a special place in France where they could discover, to French radio, the great song "Livin 'It Up" in the 80's. Besides his singing of "soft-rock," Bill is a great composer who has written for amounts of other artists. Finally, we should acknowledge his tremendous career that began in the 70s to the present without forgetting its legendary kindness.

Bill, You have released six albums (3 albums in the 70s) and one album per decade. Why the long absence from the last 3 albums?

My career over the years has been what you might call musically schizophrenic. Much of the time I am a very individually driven artist answerable only to myself for the direction I may choose to take, the themes and genres I put my music into are completely my own.

At other times I've chosen to serve the commercial marketplace as a songwriter for other recording artists I've admired and become friends with. I will confess that my choice to invest myself in the craft of songwriting has been one of economics and not necessarily pure personal desire. But I do love and admire the great art and tradition of songwriting. It has been my primary source of making a living if not my complete passion personally, as a musical artist. I like to think I put my own personal stamp on whatever I might compose, even for others.

Between "THE RIGHT DIRECTION" and your last album "BACK TO YOUR STAR", around 18 years are past, it was easy to come back on studio and realease your own album?

When I set to work on "THE RIGHT DIRECTION" I realized I had to cast aside the habits, tools, and forms I used as a commercial songwriter to create music and verse. This took awhile. But coming back into the studio was made quite easy thanks to my co-producer Robbie Dupree, who conducted the tracking dates very pleasantly, professionally and was instrumental in the cowriting and planning of the album.

"BACK TO YOUR STAR" came, as you said, many years later. For this record I wanted to take a less commercial approach to the songs and music. In the interim between this and my last album I had written many number one and top ten singles for others, movie scores, and album cuts for many Country and Pop artists. I knew that when I finally recorded another album of my own I wanted it to be more impressionistic, less pop oriented. I was more settled on what I wanted to do. It was important for me to use the many talented Southern R&B musicians I had come to know so well musically over the years. I wanted that snakier, more laid-back groove that is inherent in the performers of Memphis, Muscle Shoals, New Orleans.

Easy to plan all the great musiciains who played on "BACK TO YOUR STAR"?

It was, thankfully, easy to hire all of my favorite musicians to play on "BACK TO YOUR STAR". These guys are all very popular and busy master quality players so I had to wait to get them sometimes for as long as three weeks but when they made themselves available to me they gave their all to my music!

On your last album, there's many great tunes like "HWY 85", "Cinderella", "California Turnaround", "Back To Your Star", "Running On Fumes", this last, one of my favorite. Can you tell us more about this groovy song?

"Running On Fumes" was a riff that guitar player, Danny Parks and I were playing around with in my midi-studio. Danny was my partner and co-producer on the "BACK TO YOUR STAR" album. Lyrically it alludes to a love affair that is running on fumes, the excitement of the past, etc. It also had a certain timeliness in regard to the economic and political realities of the time. Mostly it was a nice vehicle for our band to groove on. Some of my favorite guitar playing by Danny is on it.

In the U.S., you are best known for your talents as a composer, is it frustrating not to be recognized as a full-fledged artist?

As a composer I think this frustration arises when I am asked by the artist or producer of a record to substantially alter or change the essence of my lyric or music to fit some pre-ordained needs of the project or theme. It always seems like just one more thing to dilute the purity of a musical idea and it's when I want to say, "No. You can't do that." I've never longed for that audience adulation that comes to a great performer. I have wanted to get up there on the stage and take a crack at it for myself though. And, so far, I've always been able to find the opportunity to do so.

Where do you find your inspiring influences?

My great musical loves come from the R&B of the forties, fifties, and sixties. Also the Jazz that frequently was played in my household as a child. Cootie Williams, Nat Cole, and Louis Armstrong. As an adolescent I loved Dylan and the British Invasion with the rest of my generation. As a singer I wanted to emulate Ray Charles, Etta James, Marvin Gaye, as so many others did. Later I connected with the music of the great Bebop artists, Miles, Coltrane, Parker. Larry Carlton's music continues to have a big impact on my tastes.

I love Diana Krall. There are Hip-Hop artists I love today and find myself trying to incorporate the rap phrasing of Common, Jay-Z, Eminem and others into my lyrics. I love Radiohead and will always follow Fagen and Becker and Steely Dan.

What is the album you're most proud of?

This is difficult to answer. My 1982 "BILL LaBOUNTY" album served as a giant vehicle for the wonderful performances of so many great recording musicians and artists of that time. I have Russ Titelman and his thronging resources of amazing talent to thank for this aspect of the record. But it was also very well constructed and produced. I just spent time visiting with Russ in New York City recently. I'm happy to say he is still very vitally involved with lots of great artists and very exciting projects.

Of course any recording artist always finds his present project the best and most exciting. I am now working on a new R&B and Blues album. I'm very excited about this! It will consist of some of my favorite, past R&B recordings mixed with brand new compositions of my own in the Blues vein. I'm working again with prime, blues and R&B players. Plus significant contributions from Larry Carlton and some other surprise artists.

You work mainly in Nashville, what artists and musicians with whom you like to work?

This is something I would be very excited to do! I love Robbie's music, playing, and performing. Put a big YES next to my name for this potential project.

Your album "BILL LaBOUNTY" 1982 and "THE RIGHT DIRECTION" are standards of Westcoast Music. Can you tell us about the genesis of these two cult albums for lovers of the Westcoast Music?

The "BILL LaBOUNTY" album began with a call to me from Russ Titelman, one of the heads of A&R at my label, Warner Brothers. Russ was someone I looked up to greatly for his involvement with any number of classic albums for people like James Taylor, Paul Simon and Randy Newman. I think, to break the ice, Russ told me he would like to write with me. But I believe he was really interested in my material and performing abilities. I went to his office and played my new songs for him. At the time I had a song, "Hot Rod Hearts" racing to the top of the charts for Robbie Dupree. Russ liked what he heard and began talking of a possible album with me. I was very amenable to the idea to say the least. Things grew from there. We talked about our favorite session musicians and artists. I was introduced to Lenny Waronker and we put a proper deal together.

"THE RIGHT DIRECTION" began with another phone call I received from a guy named Philipe Le Brass, a Frenchman. He told me that I had a frequently played song on French radio, "Livin' It Up". He said I should do another album. That he could guarantee substantial sales if I did. Robbie Dupree had just finished an independently created album that I loved the production on. I asked Robbie if he would consider co-producing an album with me. He did his usual great job of organization, bringing John "JR" Robinson and Neil Stubenhaus into the project. I also included Philipe LeBrass in the partnership and we began creating "THE RIGHT DIRECTION". I'm happy to be able to tell you that I have plans for an upcoming remastered and repackaged release of "THE RIGHT DIRECTION". It will contain more than a few extras and surprises.

Do you remember this gorgeous night in Paris. Your feeling about the show? (The 30/09/2006 at Casino de Paris)

This show was special to me for a number of reasons. Besides performing in the greatest city in the world there were a great number of people from all different parts of Europe who attended. Also, the enthusiasm of the audience for my music was so wonderful! I remember getting an ovation upon my introduction, before I got behind the piano to play. These are things you do not forget. Robbie and his band were very hot that night.

I took my thirteen-year-old daughter with me to this concert. She had never really understood what I do for a living. At home the music she did see me perform was primarily at the songwriting level. And I did all my work at home in my studio. She thought of her dad as a guy who hangs around the house in his bathrobe a lot. She heard me play and sing my own music for the first time on a stage in Paris, and seeing it accepted by this appreciative audience for the first time, I think was a giant revelation and eye-opener for her. It gave me great joy to show her this.

Have you recently make a tour in Japan or Asia?

I joined Larry Carlton last April for a two-week tour of Japan after the earthquake and tsunami. We were one of the first acts to perform there after the disaster. It was quite an adventure with seven point aftershocks while we were onstage in Tokyo. Larry has a new album that is a tribute to the Philadelphia Sound. Gamble and Huff songs. Larry invited me to sing on this album. "Drownin' In The Sea Of Love" and "Only The Strong Survive" are two of the songs I did. My performances of these with Larry will also be featured on my new, Rhino-Warners box set.

Who had the idea for this retrospective of your career with this "box set"?

David Dutreuil is the man behind my new Rhino-Warners box set and behind the release of many other great compilations from Rhino Warners. Nile Rogers and Donny Hathaway are just two of my favorites. Comprehensive repertoire and great sound, thanks to Gael Benjamin, are earmarks of David's efforts. I'm happy to be included in these compilations.

What was the process for the selection of unreleased songs?

Being an active songwriter, besides the works I've been lucky enough to have had recorded by others, I've accumulated close to a thousand recordings of demo versions of my compositions. Among them are many little gems of heartfelt performances from musicians, singers, and everybody involved. Many of these songs went on to be big hits and could be interesting from a historical perspective. Many never saw the light of release but contain interesting aspects anyway. For my box set I tried to choose these tracks that were heartfelt, soulful, and contained vocal and instrumental performances I felt were worth the interest of my followers. I've also written a sort of diary of memories, song by song, about the writing, recording, personal history of each track for anyone who's interested in a glimpse into the muse of a working songwriter-performer and the times he lived in.

"IN THE ZONE", a grooving, funked up, horn splashed collection that finds the energized-as-ever tenor saxophonist paying homage to the pioneering instrumental artists of his formative years ( 70s-early 80s) whose brilliance and musical innovations inspired his own.

Tower Of Power est un groupe de funk californien créé vers la fin des années 1960, renommé pour sa section de cuivre impressionnante et ses lignes de basses.

Même si la musique de Tower Of Power a changé et évolué avec le temps, leurs racines et influences musicales demeurent bien présentes. Un mélange de Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock et Westcoast. Tower Of Power a créé, comme aucun autre groupe, son propre genre (à découvrir ici), unique, difficile à classer dans les catégories traditionnellement définies.

Depuis sa création, le groupe a sorti une quinzaine d'albums et tourné avec des stars planétaires : B.B. King, Ray Charles, Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones, Eurythmics, Huey Lewis, Elton John, Santana... Grâce au succès de nouveaux artistes tels que Jamiroquai, et le retour sur le devant de la scène de groupes tels que Kool & The Gang ou Earth, Wind & Fire, le jazz-funk a connu un vrai renouveau et le répertoire de Tower Of Power en est redevenu plus actuel que jamais.

Pour célébrer leurs 40 ans de carrière, le groupe s'offre en 2010 un album live enregistré au Fillmore Auditorium de San Fransisco intitulé "40th ANNIVERSARY", regroupant tous les plus grands tubes du groupe américain, comme "You're Still a Young Man".

Tower's 40 year odyssey actually began in 1968 when Emilio Castillo met Stephen "Doc" Kupka in July of that year. When Doc auditioned during a band rehearsal at Emilio's house, Emilio's father called him into the kitchen and offered the following advice: "Hire that guy, he's got something." Doc and his signature baritone sax sound were now in the band, and on August 13, 1968, Tower Of Power, as we know them today, began playing gigs, and soon became very well known in the area.

Many other bands came out of the San Francisco Bay area in the late 60's. Bands like The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Big Brother, Journey, Cold Blood and others all helped to define the "San Francisco Sound." Tower of Power has always claimed Oakland, California as their hometown. Playing area venues and making a name for themselves, Tower of Power's big break was just around the corner.

After playing at a Tuesday night audition at the Fillmore in 1970, Tower was signed to Bill Graham’s San Francisco records and their first album, "EAST BAY GREASE" was recorded. All of the compositions were original tunes written by Castillo and Kupka. Their next album, "BUMP CITY" was recorded on the Warner Brothers label, and this led to a string of hits and memorable albums that include many of the songs that TOP fans come out in force to hear, even to this day. Over the years, the Tower of Power Horns have recorded with hundreds of artists as diverse as Aerosmith, Elton John, Little Feat, Santana, Heart, and many others, forever infusing the radio airwaves with Tower’s musical DNA.

Since the beginning, Tower Of Power has never stopped touring and recording. Always in demand, the band never fails to entertain and amaze their fans. Tower is truly blessed to have a dedicated following that often travels to see the band, and in many cases fans will plan their vacation or work schedule around an appearance of TOP.

Tower celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2008 at a very special reunion show at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. In addition to the ten current members of the band, another 20 musicians and vocalists that at one time held a position with the band appeared with them. The show was filmed and is available on DVD. Of the ten current members, Emilio Castillo, Rocco Prestia, Stephen Kupka and David Garibaldi are four of the band’s founding members. Their dedication to the music, their creative writing, and their original vision still guides Tower Of Power.

Each year Tower of Power tours the United States, Japan and Europe, playing to sold out crowds all over the world. Recent releases include "Great American Soulbook", a collection of classic soul tunes, and the 40th Anniversary Concert DVD. Tower has never been busier or more in demand. New generations of fans come to see the band perform as their timeless music continues to excite fans of all ages. After almost three years in production we are thrilled to announce the release of Allan Thomas' 5th studio album "DEEP WATER". The compact disc is being manufactured presently and will be in hand and available for purchase October 31, 2011, with digital downloads available as of today.

Besides the usual highly-skilled cast of AT bandmates, the record features such luminaries as David Crosby and Graham Nash, plus members of the Bonnie Raitt, Neil Young, James Taylor, Van Morrison, CSN and Yellowjackets bands. The album contains 12 songs that span time from as recent as the summer of 2011 - to 'Homegrown' written in 1976.

Making good on my promise of releasing at least one album of original material each decade we offer "DEEP WATER". With the generous help of over twenty-one stellar musicians playing in top form, we find songs ranging in territory from 'The Longest Ride' - a tribute to fallen surfer Andy Irons, featuring backing vocals by David Crosby & Graham Nash, to "The Downturn" - a tongue-in-cheek take on the current state of economic mayhem. The record also features several character-driven compositions, among them "Other Than That" - a vocal and drums only litany on the worst aspects of some people we all know, set to a late ’50′s jazz groove, and the wizened and weary weed smuggler confessional in the searing rock-blues "Monkey Business". The many facets of romance are not forgotten with a first-time studio rendering of the 1979 AT classic "Fall In Love Too Easy", and a ballad that endeavors to sum it all up in "It All Comes Down To Love", among others.

Signé chez WEA en 1977, le groupe Weekend Millionnaire fut un des rares groupes de variété française à proposer une musique influencée par les groupes vocaux de la côte Ouest Américaine. On pense à America, Eagles, CSN&Y, Poco, Beach Boys mais aussi à certains groupes anglais : Easybeats, Hollies. Le dénominateur commun étant la recherche permanente de mélodies, d'harmonies vocales mettant la formation un peu à part des groupes à succès de son époque (Téléphone, Trust, Starshooter, Bijou...).

Le groupe bénéficia de beaucoup d'airplay à la fin des années 70 et au début des années 80 et se produisit dans de nombreuses émissions TV de l'époque. Après sa période Warner, le groupe réalisa ensuite plusieurs singles pour d'autres labels ainsi qu'un album en 1992. Le groupe bénéficie aujourd'hui d'une notoriété importante auprès des fans de musique californienne et de soft-rock. Il est également apprécié par les amateurs d'une variété française positive, riche et mélodique.

Premier groupe à succès de la vague Toulousaine des flying 80's, Weekend Millionnaire laisse au travers des chansons de ce collector un témoignage émouvant de cette époque dorée.

Signed to WEA in 1977, the group Weekend Millionaire was one of the few groups to offer a French variety music influenced by the vocal groups of the American West Coast. One thinks of America, Eagles, CSN & Y, Poco, Beach Boys, but also some English bands: Easybeats, Hollies. The common denominator is the constant search for melodies, vocal harmonies making training a little part of the successful groups of its time (Telephone, Trust, Starshooter, Bijou...).

The group enjoyed a lot of airplay in the late 70s and early 80s and appeared in many TV shows of the time. After his Warner period, the group then directed several singles for other labels as well as an album in 1992. The group now enjoys a significant reputation among music fans and Californian soft-rock. It is also appreciated by fans of French pop positive, rich and melodic.

The DeBarge family brothers El, Randy, Mark and James, and sister Bunny signed to Motown and released their first album in 1981, kicking off an intense four years where they rose to the top of the charts with timeless ballads and classic dance tracks. "TIME WILL REVEAL: THE COMPLETE MOTOWN ALBUM" collects the group's four out-of-print albums on two CDs, restoring them to the marketplace for the first time in years, while adding a bonus third disc of remixes and unreleased versions. Among the many highlights are the No. 1 hits "Rhythm Of The Night" in its original and extended remixed version; "All This Love" from the same-titled album as well in a newly discovered alternate version; and the set's title song, sounding better than ever in a previously unheard, long version.

DeBarge, led by El's instantly recognizable falsetto voice, were renowned for their infectious melodies and memorable hooks in gorgeous-sounding productions. Motown saw them as heir apparent to the Jackson 5, another family dynasty that had left the label in the mid-'70s. But unlike the Jacksons, the DeBarges were given free rein to write, produce and arrange their own material.

After a debut album that showed promise but not much in sales, their second LP, "ALL THIS LOVE" went gold. In "A SPECIAL WAY", which included "Time Will Reveal" their first top 20 pop hit, and "Love Me In A Special Way" featuring a harmonica solo by label mate Stevie Wonder, followed. The album also included "A Dream" and "Stay With Me" which have become better known as samples in several hip-hop classics, from "One More Chance/Stay With Me" by Notorious B.I.G and Faith Evans to Mariah Carey's "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time." As a special bonus, this 3-CD set includes instrumental versions of the original DeBarge tracks.

With "RHYTHM OF THE NIGHT" and its title hit song, DeBarge leapt into the pop mainstream. Two other songs from the album, "You Wear It Well" and "The Heart Is Not So Smart" were dance hits; their rare "M+M" remixes are included on the bonus disc.

The accompanying booklet includes reproductions of the original album artwork, track annotations and a career overview by Gail Mitchell, Senior Editor of R&B/Hip-Hop for Billboard, who was seen on-screen as a commentator in the celebrated DeBarge episode of TVOne's Unsung.

Jon Lind, such as the Fifth Avenue Band is responsible for producing original of this work, the artist was noted as a fan SSW Fifth Avenue Band sect. His songs Eagles, Don Henley, Aaron Neville, Chaka Khan, Average White Band, Atlantic Starr, Pybo Bryson, Emotions, Rod Stewart, Bonnie Raitt, Joe Cocker, Bruce Willis, Betty Wright & Nicolette Larson, has been featured in so many artists and so on and so forth. Has also picked up five songs from the artists mentioned above this work. This work masterpieces that taste good out of oxidized silver smoky voice of Larry the hit single "Just Like Paradise" Ballad of goods and tears "Real Good Thing" also said the true value of the gems of the other city factions singer-songwriter eternal masterpiece filled with songs!
